Faubus House Tours

Join the E Fay Jones Conservancy for a guided tour of the breathtaking Orval A. Faubus House, perched atop a gorgeous bluff with a cantilevering balcony that overlooks downtown Huntsville, Arkansas.

This residence, designed by Fay Jones for former Arkansas Governor Orval and Alta Faubus, was completed in 1967 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The seven thousand, three hundred fifty-six square foot design hovers along the edge of a bluff and exemplifies Fay Jones’ penchant for designing buildings specifically for the land on which they are constructed.

The stone column, post and beam house is an excellent example of Modern Organic architecture. Exterior material choices, colors and strong horizontal roof line allow the building to essentially melt into the building site. Jumbo wood shingles, fieldstone from Alta’s family farm in Arkansas, floor to ceiling glass openings, and mahogany plywood achieve this goal. Although incorporating many refined design elements and treatments, the most prominent feature of this house is the eight by thirty-foot catwalk, cantilevered over a bluff edge. This bluff splits the acreage in half, and a rock stair, built by the stonemasons that crafted the house, serves to combine the disparate portions of the property, above and below. This house retains its original integrity, as there have been no alterations of floor plan or materials and it has been well preserved and maintained.

This tour is residential and all tour attendance is by ticket purchase only.
